A Beautiful Climb Towards the Mountain Town of Orient

Route summary:

This route runs inland on the west side of the island towards the town of Orient. It is basically one long climb starting in Bunyola and going all the way to Orient, the destination, followed after Orient by a short but steep out-and-back climb from Alaró to the mountain restaurant Es Verger below Alaró Castle. This route is intermediate level due to both its length and elevation. This route will take 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Along the way, there are some beautiful views of the Tramuntana highlands and picturesque towns, ideal places to stop and recover some energy. Bunyola is a small town with stunning terraced gardens, Orient lies at the top of the long climb, Es Verger has a terrace below the castle, Alaró has several cafés on its main square, and there is the wine town of Santa Maria del Camí.

 Cycling route summary:

The first kilometers of the route will take you through the western part of the island. They are mostly flat, sometimes slightly hilly. This easy warm up, will take you to the foot of the Tramuntana mountains near Bunyola. You will then start a long climb through a breathtaking valley to the town Orient. A few kilometers long descent will follow afterwards. It is necessary to be very careful and focus on the technical aspect of your riding, when passing through the corners. There is a short climb to Alaró at the end of this descent. You can easily challenge your friends there, to compare your strengths. On the edge of Alaró the route turns onto the narrow Camí des Castell, which climbs 4.3 km at an average of 8% (with ramps of about 13%) through 19 hairpins to the Es Verger restaurant at around 560 m. Come back down the same way with care – the road is narrow and at weekends walkers use it to reach the castle – and stop for a coffee on the square in Alaró. The last kilometers from Alaró to Santa Maria del Camí are mainly flat. They are going through the narrow Mallorcan streets, between typical village farmsteads - fincas. The end of the route then gradually descends back to Can Pastilla.

 Tourist summary:

This route through the Orient and Tramuntana mountains will show you the inland on the west side of the island. It will project a number of beautiful places . The Serra de Tramuntana has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, due to its natural and cultural significance.

Tips from our guides

  • Coll d'Honor is 7.1 km at 5.5% with 16 hairpins, and it gets harder near the top: the last few hundred metres are the toughest. Save something for the finish.
  • The Ma-2100 is narrow but quiet. The 2.6 km drop from Coll d'Honor into Orient has 9 hairpins and a section of about 11%, so brake early.
  • Orient lies at over 400 m in a shady valley and stays cool on winter mornings. From October to April bring a gilet and arm warmers.
  • The climb to Es Verger is narrow and steep: 4.3 km at 8%, with ramps of about 13% and 19 hairpins. Descend carefully – walkers use the road at weekends. The castle itself is reachable only on foot.
  • The first kilometres around Palma and through Marratxí bring roundabouts and commuter traffic. Avoid the weekday morning rush and ride single file on the busier roads.
