Training tips for Mallorca

Every session starts and finishes at our shop in Can Pastilla – from a 19 km recovery spin to the whole island in a day. Follow these few rules and you'll leave camp fitter, not wrecked.

Plan the week, don't race it

Keep the first two days low-intensity – travel, a new bike and the warmth take more out of you than you think. Then alternate hard and easy days, never two intensity days back to back, and build volume gradually.

Set up the rental like yours

Measure saddle height at home (bottom-bracket centre to the top of the saddle, along the seat tube) and saddle setback. Bring your own shoes – and pedals if you like – or pick the pedal type in online check-in. Fine-tune after your first short ride.

Pacing without a power meter

Use the talk test: Z2 = full sentences, sweet spot = short phrases, threshold = a few words, VO2max = no talking. Heart rate lags in short intervals and drifts up in the heat, so let perceived effort (RPE) lead.

Eat and drink early

Start in the first hour: 30–60 g of carbs per hour on rides up to 2.5 h, 60–90 g on longer ones (top end only with a trained gut), plus 0.5–0.8 l of fluid with electrolytes per hour, more in heat. Refill at village cafés and petrol stations.

Start early: heat and wind

Mornings are cooler and calmer; from late morning the embat sea breeze blows in from the sea, so the ride back to Can Pastilla is often into a headwind. On windy days ride out into the wind and home with it. Sunscreen even in autumn.

Keep intervals safe

Ride efforts single file at the road edge – never through villages, roundabouts or on descents. Use a rear light by day and a front one for the Puig Major tunnels. After the clocks change in late October the sun sets around 6 pm, in December about 5:20.

Recovery is part of training

You get fitter while resting, not while riding. Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep, eat carbs and protein within an hour of finishing, and keep easy days truly easy – no town-sign sprints. Alcohol hurts sleep and recovery.

Sample training-camp week

For a fit club rider: three key sessions of rising intensity, with easy days and one rest day in between. Triathletes can swap days 3 and 7 for the brick sessions; very strong riders can swap day 5 for Coll de Sóller 4x and day 7 for the Sa Calobra queen day.

  1. Day 1Recovery spin · Bay of Palma – After arrival just spin the legs on the flat bay road and check your bike setup.
  2. Day 2Z2 endurance · Campos – Porreres – First volume at a conversational Z2 pace – shorten it if the travel still weighs on you, and practise eating and drinking every 20–30 minutes.
  3. Day 3Sweet spot 3 × 15 min · Llucmajor – First structured session: 3 × 15 min of sweet spot is solid work you recover from quickly.
  4. Day 4Rest day: sleep, eat, go for a walk – at most an hour of very easy spinning.
  5. Day 5Randa 5× – Key day of the week on fresh legs: five climbs of Randa, from sweet spot up to threshold.
  6. Day 6Recovery spin · Bay of Palma – After the hardest day just easy Z1, so tomorrow's session has quality.
  7. Day 7VO2max 4 × 5 min · Ses Voltes – A sharp finale: 4 × 5 min VO2max on the steep side of Randa, then rest before the flight home.
